Hackers managed to beat University cyber-defences in just two hours

Is your university student’s data safe?

In a recent test of UK university defences against potentially threatening cyber-attacks, it was established that hackers could obtain high-value data in as little as two hours.

The study, carried out by Jisc (formerly the Joint Information Systems Committee) an internet services agency, involved ethical hackers organising simulated attacks and penetration-testing on more than 50 universities in the UK. The testing found that the ethical hackers were able to access personal data, finance systems and research networks within two hours and in some cases just one hour.

Already under threat…

Research projects across more than 200 universities have had to deal with repeated attacks from hackers in the past twelve months with more than 1,000 cyber-attacks reported in 2018. The National Cyber Security Centre, part of GCHQ in Cheltenham said that most attacks on UK universities were related to phishing and attempts to gain entry for ransomware.

Encouraging prevention…

Following the hacking simulations, it was determined that Jisc had a 100% success rate of getting through the cyber-defences and accessing the data. The results from the testing also found that the most effective approach to gaining access to the universities data was through spear phishing.

John Chapman, head of Jisc’s security operations centre said “We are not confident that all UK universities are equipped with adequate cyber-security knowledge, skills and investment.”

That’s exactly why we’ve developed a phishing e-learning course to help staff learn and develop their understanding of cyber security and how to better recognise the potential threats.

Condensed into quick and easy to digest modules, our phishing course provides an essential tool for staff who are responsible for safeguarding high-value data. Training is a great preventative measure in that it supports your staff to recognise potential threats more easily, and reduces the risk that your high-value data is compromised.

For more information or to enrol your team onto our e-learning course for phishing from just £25.00 + VAT, please get in touch on 01285 770984.
